Dr. Abby Maxwell is a graduate of Duke University (2003), Bachelor of Science,. Major-Biology, concentration in Marine Biology; Minor – Economics. She received her medical degree from New York Medical College in 2008.
Dr. Maxwell did her post graduate training in Orthopaedic surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University and received her Sports Medicine Fellowship from MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Dr. Maxwell specializes in Sports Medicine and has had the opportunity to work as an associate team physician for several college and professional teams during her training including Loyola University’s men’s and women’s soccer, basketball and lacrosse teams, Towson University’s men’s and women’s lacrosse, Morgan State University’s men’s and women’s basketball. She was also able to work alongside the head team physicians for the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Nationals. In addition to working with professional and college athletes, she worked as an associate team physician for Thomas Jefferson High School Football (Richmond, VA), Associate team physician John Marshall High School Football (Richmond, VA), and Varina High School Football, (Richmond, VA).
Dr. Maxwell enjoys working with athletes and finds it very rewarding. She loves their enthusiasm for sports and their desire to play. She is motivated to help athletes/patients get back to what they love to do. When it comes to sports medicine, she understands the importance of intervention and prevention to stop injuries before they happen, always exploring non-surgical as well as surgical options, and serving athletes to counteract the upsurge in sports injuries.
She and her husband are looking forward to life in Western North Carolina.
